There’s something about Hawaii that makes you want to slow down and take it all in. The ocean views, the warm air, the beautiful landscapes, and the laid-back island atmosphere make it easy to forget about your usual routine for a little while.
Our week in Honolulu, Oahu, was a little bit of everything. We explored beautiful places, tried different foods, spent time with family, made new friends along the way, celebrated a special wedding, and found plenty of opportunities to relax by the waves. Some days were filled with adventure, while others were about enjoying good food, shopping, and simply taking in the views.
If you’re planning a trip to Honolulu, here are some of the places we visited and moments that made our week in Hawaii special.
First Stop: Fresh Poke & Fireworks by the Ocean
You can’t start a Hawaii trip without getting some fresh poke! One of our first stops was Foodland, where the lines were crowded with people picking up their favorite local foods. It was busy but worth the wait.

We grabbed our food and headed to the ocean to enjoy it with a view. There’s something about eating fresh local food by the water that makes the experience even better. Good food, ocean air, and a beautiful view.

To make the evening even more memorable, we got to enjoy a fireworks show over the ocean. Watching the fireworks light up the night sky with the water in the background was the perfect way to kick off our Hawaii trip.

Shopping, Art & Exploring Honolulu
Of course, there was some shopping along the way.
We visited Ala Moana Center, which is a great stop if you want to browse stores, grab something to eat, or spend a few hours exploring.

We also explored SALT at Our Kakaʻako, a neighborhood known for its creative atmosphere, local businesses, and street art.

One of the highlights was seeing the Tokidoki mural. The colorful artwork added a fun pop of personality to the area and made for a great photo stop.

Hiking to Manoa Falls
One of our adventures was hiking to Manoa Falls. The trail takes you through a beautiful tropical setting filled with greenery, towering trees, and that lush scenery Hawaii is known for.
It’s a different side of the island from the beaches and city streets, and it was worth experiencing.
If you’re planning to visit, wear shoes with good traction because the trail can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Bring water, give yourself enough time, and enjoy the surroundings. Exploring nature is such a great chance to disconnect and appreciate what’s around you.

Beach Walks & Time to Relax by the Waves
Some of my favorite moments in Hawaii were also the simplest.
Walking along the beaches, watching the waves roll in, and taking in the views became little reminders to slow down. There’s no rush when you’re by the ocean. You can walk for a while, sit and watch the water, take a few pictures, or just enjoy being there.

A Visit to Pearl Harbor
We also visited Pearl Harbor. It was a meaningful change of pace from the beaches, shopping, and food stops. Visiting gives you an opportunity to learn and reflect on the history and lives connected to that day.

A Special Family Wedding, Great Food & Dancing
One of the most meaningful parts of the trip was celebrating the wedding of a close friend’s daughter and spending time together. There was great food, lots of dancing, late-night drinks, and plenty of time to enjoy everyone’s company.

We even made our way to a two-stepping bar, which added a fun and unexpected twist to the trip. We also met new people throughout the trip, which made the experience feel even more connected.
A Peaceful Stop at Byodo-In Temple
Another beautiful place we visited was Byodo-In Temple, located in the Valley of the Temples on Oahu.
Surrounded by mountains and greenery, the temple feels peaceful and removed from the busier parts of the island. The architecture, gardens, and scenic setting make it a lovely place to walk around, take photos, and enjoy a quieter moment.

Polynesian Cultural Center & A Luau Experience
We also spent time at the Polynesian Cultural Center, where we enjoyed the buffet and experienced a luau.
The center offers an opportunity to learn about the cultures and traditions of Polynesia through cultural presentations, performances, and interactive experiences.
If you’re visiting Oahu for the first time and want to include a cultural experience in your itinerary, this is one option to consider. I’d recommend checking the available packages and schedules ahead of time so you can plan your visit around the experiences you’re most interested in.

The Food Stops That Made the Trip
Let’s talk about the food, because we definitely enjoyed plenty of it!
One of my favorite things about traveling is trying different places and discovering what makes each destination unique. In Hawaii, that meant everything from fresh poke and noodles to local bakery treats and more memorable dining experiences.
Here are some of the places we enjoyed during the trip.
Foodland — Fresh Poke
Our first poke stop was a must. Despite the crowded lines, picking up fresh poke and enjoying it by the ocean was one of those quintessential Hawaii experiences.

Leonard’s Bakery — Malasadas
Leonard’s Bakery is famous for its malasadas, the Portuguese-style fried dough treats that are especially popular in Hawaii. If you have a sweet tooth, it’s worth adding to your food itinerary.

Marugame Udon — A Casual Noodle Stop
Marugame Udon was another stop on our food adventure. It’s a great option when you’re in the mood for a casual meal centered around freshly prepared udon noodles.

Zippy’s — A Local Favorite
We also stopped at Zippy’s, a familiar Hawaii dining name known for its mix of local-style comfort food and casual favorites.
It’s a good option when you want something relaxed rather than a full dining experience, especially if you’re looking to try food that’s part of everyday life on the islands.

The Sunrise Shack — A Bright Start
The Sunrise Shack was another fun food stop. Known for its colorful smoothie bowls, tropical drinks, and island-inspired menu, it fits right into the relaxed Hawaii atmosphere.

Romer House Waikiki — Le Petit Chef
For a different kind of dining experience, we visited Le Petit Chef at Romer House Waikiki.
This was a more immersive experience than a typical restaurant meal. It’s a nice contrast to casual places like Foodland and Zippy’s and a reminder that a trip can include everything from simple local favorites to a special night out.

From poke by the ocean to bakery treats, noodles, comfort food, and a unique dining experience, the variety made exploring Honolulu’s food scene even more enjoyable.
Our Last Day: Sunset Photos at Magic Island
For our final day, we headed to Magic Island to take sunset photos.
Magic Island, near Ala Moana Beach Park, is a beautiful spot for ocean views, with the Honolulu skyline and coastline creating a lovely backdrop. As the light changed, it was the perfect place to capture a few final memories before leaving Hawaii.

Chasing aloha was about more than visiting a beautiful place. Hawaii gave us a little bit of everything: adventure, culture, connection, good food, and time to slow down.
I think the best travel memories are the ones that remind you how good it feels to experience something new, reconnect with people, and enjoy the moment you’re in.
Until next time, Hawaii 🌺 Aloha for now 🖤
